The Larian Studios has announced an original version of Gate 3 of Baldur for the steam deck. You no longer need to run it using protons.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was an undisputed game of the year for many people. However, a Linux native version is not available, although a MACOS version exists. He said according to Abundant The game has a gold rating, which means the Windows version of Baldur’s Gate 3 is perfectly playing on Linux using the wine compatibility layer, aka proton of the valve. You may have to tinker with some settings to play the game, just read the comments on the protons, it can help you.
However, you do not need to use protons on steam decks. You can play a native version of CRPG on your handheld, thanks to the latest updates, which is the hotfix #34. It offers a stable frimit on the steam deck, low loading time and smooth gameplay. Run says The patch is not only about steam decks, it also improves frame rates on other platforms, and reduces frimit spikes in Act 3. You can learn more about the steam deck version of Baldur’s Gate 3 by reading the official FAQ page. Larian website,
Now, this news has created some enthusiasm among the Linux gaming community. However, the FAQ page that I mentioned above says, “The Larian Linux does not provide support for the Linux platform. Steam deck indigenous build is supported only on the steam deck.” It is rather bizarre, I wonder why he did not mention it on the steam page of the game, or at least in the release notes of the update.
As you know, steamos is basically a custom version of the Arc Linux. So, the steam deck version of Gate 3 of Baldur must be compatible with most of the distributs, in principle. Larian’s disconnection is probably his way to say that he only tested/adapted it for steamos, not on other distros. In other words, it may be a small car on non-stem deck devices.
Linux Gamers Spotted A Steamdb depot that lists some NVIDIA SDK libraries that were compiled for Linux in the latest version of BG3. So it meant that the Linux version exists. It failed when some curious players tried to download it through steam. This is likely to be due to the steam deck specific Linux version of BG3, all files are marked only as steam decks. So the desktop client will not download it. This problem has been fixed since then, but some users managed to download the Linux version and managed to run it on their computer.
One of them tested the Linux version of Baldur’s Gate 3, and the benchmark indicates that the native version seems better, although the loading time was longer than running the Windows version using the proton.
Recently, Microsoft increased the price of Xbox for the second time in 5 months. But, the valve is exempted Steam Deck LCD 20%, till 6 October. This is a sweet deal. And if you do not have Baldur’s Gate 3 in your steam library, and want to choose the game, I would suggest waiting to start the Steam Autumn Sale by 29 September, so that you can get the game at a more cheap price.
