Microsoft started testing a reimagined Windows 11 Start menu some time ago. There was a feature involved in changes that some Windows users wanted to see from years: the option to completely remove the recommended section.
This wish has been provided and still in the test, there is something that the Windows users can see further. Along with the change, there are other modifications in the start menu, and one of them may potentially disturb users.
Automatic classification of applications
All installed applications are taken to the startpage of the Windows 11 Start menu. This means that you do not need to click on the “All” link to get a list of apps installed on the system.
Microsoft shows these apps directly into a new category scene. Apps are sorted into categories such as productivity, sports, social, or utilities and equipment.
Looks great? While the categories look good on paper, the implementation of Microsoft does not support the option to create custom categories.
In addition, categories are visible only when at least three apps are sorted into one. If you remove all apps but one or two from a category, that category is removed. Apps are transported to other categories, which will probably be the largest available.
A JSON file on the device determines the category of an application. This is good for privacy, because Windows does not send Microsoft to the complete list of its installed apps only to put in categories.
The negative side is that this is a very certain case. Since you cannot create custom categories, you are left with the default categories that Microsoft has created.
While there is a theoretical opportunity that is offering the option to create custom categories before shipping the microsoft feature, or after that, I will not stop my breath. Microsoft took only four years, giving users an option to give an option to hide the recommended in the start menu.
