Microsoft A series of emergency out-of-band updates have been released to address serious issues introduced by the January 2026 Patch Tuesday update. The affected patches caused shutdown and hibernation failures on some systems and disrupted access to remote desktop-based cloud services.
The issues emerged soon after Microsoft released the cumulative update on January 13, 2026. Users reported irregular behavior on both consumer and enterprise systems, prompting Microsoft to acknowledge the problems and publish fixes outside of the normal update cadence.
One of the confirmed issues affects remote access azure virtual desktop And windows 365. After installing the January Update, some systems were not able to establish Remote Desktop connections, preventing users from accessing cloud-hosted Windows environments.
The second issue affects devices with Secure Launch enabled. On these systems, shutdown and hibernation are no longer working as expected. Instead of shutting down the power, affected machines will restart repeatedly, making it difficult to shut down the system completely.
Due to the scope of the issues, Microsoft released several standalone updates rather than waiting for the next Patch Tuesday. The company published six separate out-of-band updates windows 11 Versions 23H2 to 25H2, windows 10 Version 22H2, and supports Windows Server releases from 2019 to 2025.
Emergency updates are currently available Microsoft Update Catalog. Microsoft has indicated that the fixes will be included in regular February 2026 cumulative updates, reducing the need for separate installations later on.
Confirmed bugs as well as additional issues reported outlook Failure to start, black screen during login, and other stability issues. Microsoft has not confirmed whether these behaviors are directly related to the January Update or addressed by out-of-band fixes.
Systems affected by shutdown failures or broken Remote Desktop connections are expected to return to normal behavior after installing the emergency update.
