It looks like Valve’s Android compatibility layer for Linux has a name. It is called lepton.

If you don’t know about it, Android is a container-based compatibility layer that lets users run Android apps on Linux. You may know that Valve has a compatibility layer called Proton for Windows games. Now they are preparing for Android games. Proton, lepton, anyone likes particle physics.

It’s likely that Lepton was developed primarily with something specific in mind. Shortly after Valve announced Steam Machine, Steam Controller, and Steam Frame, Jeremy Salen, a Valve engineer, told The Verge That the VR headset will support Android games. Developers can use the same APK to port their apps to it from the phone, so they don’t have any additional burden of porting their work to the platform.
A few weeks ago, Valve added support for Android and Linux Arm to the Steamworks SDK. The Steam Frame is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Based on all this, it is quite easy to tell what Lepton will be about when playing Android games on Steam OS, on the Steam Frame. The VR headset will launch in early 2026 along with the new Steam Controller and Steam Machine.
It is unclear whether Lepton will be supported on other devices. The Steam Deck, with its built-in controller and touch screen, would be a great way to play Android games. I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be available for desktop. There are many ways to play Android games on PC using emulators like Google Play Games, BlueStacks, etc.
