WhatsApp has introduced native voice and video calling directly within the browser version of the app, bringing it much closer to feature parity with the WA mobile and desktop clients.
For a long time, WhatsApp Web has been perfect for replying to messages from a laptop, but frustratingly incomplete when it comes to calls. If you want to go to voice or video chat, you’ll have to switch to your phone or install the desktop app. That gap is finally closing.
WhatsApp Web video and voice calls are finally possible

The new WhatsApp web update is dedicated phone and camera icon Inside personal chat. From there, you can make voice or video calls without leaving your browser tab.
This feature was first seen in beta testing and is currently being slowly rolled out. Although it’s not available to everyone yet, early testers confirm that calling works smoothly within the web interface.
If you prefer to work solely in Chrome, Edge, or another browser (especially on a device without robust native apps) this is a major upgrade.
You can now make calls from WhatsApp Web App
This is not just a basic video call implementation. WhatsApp Web Calling includes several key features:
screen sharing
You can share your desktop screen during a WhatsApp video call, making it useful for collaboration, presentations or quick troubleshooting sessions.
End-to-end encryption
Calls and chats are protected by WhatsApp’s existing encryption framework based on the Signal protocol. Conversations conducted through a browser are as secure as those conducted on mobile.
separate call windows
Incoming calls appear in a floating or separate window, allowing users to answer or reject without disrupting their current tab or workflow.
It feels like a fully integrated communications tool.
Browser-based WhatsApp calling for Chromebook and Linux users
The WhatsApp Web Call update is especially worthwhile for:
- Chromebook usersWho often depended on the Android version or web app of WhatsApp without calling support.
- linux userWho never had the official WhatsApp desktop client.
With browser-based calling now available, WhatsApp Web becomes a complete communications platform on these systems – no additional installation required.
For many of you, this removes the last reason to have your phone nearby during work hours.
When will WhatsApp Web Call be available?
At the moment, the WhatsApp web calling feature is visible to users enrolled in the beta program.
There’s no official timeline for a full public rollout, but given the maturity of the feature (including working screen sharing and encryption), a wider release isn’t too far off.
Once live, you’ll see new call icons at the top of the chat window.
For years, WhatsApp Web has been incredibly convenient (but incomplete). The addition of voice and video calling finally turns it into a true desktop communications hub.
If you’ve been in a browser tab all day, this could be the update you’ve been waiting for.
