Microsoft plans to support major versions of its Windows 10 operating system in October 2025. This affects all domestic users and many businesses equally. Given that about half of all Windows PCs still run Windows 10, it is appropriate to say that the finished support at this level can end in the disaster.
This is one of the reasons that Microsoft has provided extended security updates for domestic users for the first time. It postpones the death of the system for a year, but you need to be active for it.
Microsoft had earlier stated that home users have three options to join ESU on their Windows 10 devices:
- Pay $ 30 to get one year update.
- Pay with 1000 Microsoft Award points.
- Use Windows Backup to sync settings on the cloud.
But how do you really join the expanded update program? The following guide answers that question, at least for home users.
How to join ESU on Windows 10
Microsoft revealed that comprehensive availability of the option of joining is available in August. If you install the latest preview updates for Windows 10, you should receive it in advance in July.
- Open the settings on the Windows 10 device.
- Select Windows update.
- Check “as soon as they will be available, get the latest updates”.
- Click “Check for Updates”.
It should install the most recent updates. If you do not want to install preview updates, wait for August 2025 Patch Day (12 August), including the required updates.
How to enroll
Check the section on the Windows update page which is under the “Czech for updates” button. It should be said that “Windows 10 support ends in October 2025. Enroll in extended security updates to help keep your device safe”.
Click on the “Enroll Nau” link to start the process, or click “Learn about the end of support” Open this page On the Microsoft website. It provides suggestions to upgrade to the end of support and – compulsory – Windows 11.
When you activate “enrollment”, “enrollment in extended security updates” is loaded “window. Microsoft displays basic information here, mainly that your PC will continue to receive security updates after October 2025. There is no word on the page about the end of the program, which is in October 2026.
Select the “Next” button to move forward, or “probably later” come back to leave the process at this level and in the latter time.
The available options are displayed on the next screen.
The default option is set to “back up your PC settings”. It copies “settings, apps and credentials” on the ondrive cloud. You can later import data to a new PC to run a new PC to run Windows 11, which is probably expected by Microsoft that most Windows 10 customers will once out of support.
If you have 1,000, or pay Microsoft instead, you can also redeem Microsoft Rewards points.
Tip: If you choose the back up option, but have configured your system to sync your microsoft account with Windows, you can still enroll without any additional cost.
Select the “Enroll” button to move forward. You should go to the success page that confirms that your PC will receive an extended security update by October 2026.
Click on the button made to get out of the window and go back to the Settings app. The main page should confirm that the PC is also nominated to obtain an extended security updates.
That is all there is to it. Millions of PCs running Windows 10 will be nominated to receive extended security updates in the coming weeks and months.
