Microsoft revealed the remake of the classic video wallpaper feature Dreamsken for Windows only yesterday. Today, Microsoft is confirming that its recent version of its Windows 11 operating system suffers from video playback issues.
Microsoft reveals information Windows 11, version 24h2 known issues and information on information page. Windows users who run the most recent version of Windows 11 on their devices, they can “experience problems in playing protected materials” on the page “write Microsoft on the page.
The issue can occur after installing the non-security preview of the update of 29 August, 2025 or later updates. Microsoft issued a cumulative update for the public on Tuesday 9, 2025 for Windows 11, version 24h2.
Microsoft suggests that the problem affects applications that use HDCP enforcement for digital audio, or extended video render with digital rights management (DRM). Users may experience “copyright protection errors” such as “frequent playback obstruction, freezing, or black screen” according to Microsoft.
However, the problem does not affect video streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu or HBO Max. In other words, the problem is affecting the media playback app, for example DVD or Blue-ray playing apps, or Digital TV app.
Enhanced video render is a heritage component replaced by simple video render (SVR). This component is part of the mediaplayer and imfmediaengine. Microsoft does not name any app that still depends on the inheritance component for playback. The app affected by this issue is unknown because of this.
Microsoft says it is working on a resolution for this issue. It is planning to release update information in future, “when it is available”. The affected users have just a few options at this point:
- Dowgraded the operating system in the earlier version with a patch level pre-August 29th.
- Switch to use a playback app that is not affected.
- Avoid seeing DRM-protected materials in the apps until the microsoft solves the problem.
Options one and two should fix the problem on the user’s device, but they come with their problems. Uninstalling the September 2025 patch is left unprotected for potential attacks to the operating system, which targets the weaknesses fixed in the update to Microsoft.
Switching on any other app can work, but since Microsoft has not provided a list of apps that are affected or work, it is a hit-end-mise-type situation. The developer of an app can provide an update to address the problem, for example, by taking a simple video render using the enhanced video render.
In all, the best option for most users is to make it sit out and wait for an official patch to arrive.
